Yvonne Hindes,PhD

Professor of Psychology/Registered Psychologist

Yvonne Hindes, Ph.D, is a registered psychologist. I have been a registered psychologist with the College of Alberta Psychologists since 2010. I have my Early Childhood Development Certificate from the Red Deer College, my Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from the University of Lethbridge, and my Master's Degree and Ph.D in School and Applied Child Psychology from the University of Calgary.

I have attended, as well as presented at, national and international conferences. Throughout my education, I was involved in a variety of research projects (focusing on topics such as inclusive education, Asperger's Disorder, resilience, program evaluation, youth leadership, school psychology, and instrument construction) that were locally and nationally funded. In addition, I published articles related to several of these research projects. I continue to enhance my professional development through attending workshops and conferences, as well as staying up to date with research and best practices related to assessment.

I have had practical and clinical experience as a psychologist at a public school board, a private special education school, a university clinic, and in private practice. I have worked with children, adults, and families with diverse educational and cultural backgrounds. I offer professional and comprehensive assessments, and support and recommendations to assist the individual in his/her learning and everyday life. Throughout my role as a school psychologist, I have had the opportuniity to collaborate and consult with parents, teachers, and other professionals in order to best meet the needs of students.

I am a sessional instructor at the University of Calgary and Athabasca University. I have taught courses in multiple areas-research, statistics, assessment, ADHD, mental health, and devleopment- to students enrolled in online and on-campus graduate programs. In addition, I have supervised students involved in clinical work.

Personal Statement And My Path So Far

The heart of my philosophy centers on the concept that effective assessment requires a comprehensive and thorough evaluation of the individual's strengths and areas of need, and it involves providing an individual with the fundamental tools, recommendations, strategies, and supports that he/she needs in order to perform and be successful. When completing an assessment, I invite an individual to reflect on his/her life experiences and I bring in knowledge from research to contextualize and explore answers to his/her assessment questions. I view my role as that of a skilled professional guiding an individual in the course of constructing his/her knowledge base and better understanding who he/she is as a person.

My clinical experience, as well as my experience as an instructor, has indeed provided me with the opportunity to grow and mature as an educator and a psychologist. Given the breadth of experience that I have received, as well as the diversity of the individuals that I have worked with, I have truly been able to develop my skills during my teaching and professional career.

As a researcher, instructor, and clinician I want to contribute to the field of psychology in the areas of assessment, intervention, and consultation. Specifically, I want to:

  • Improve overall academic achievement

  • Promote good mental health and positive behaviour

  • Support diverse learners

  • Strengthen partnerships between schools, families, and other professionals

  • Improve assessment and accountability

  • Evaluate programs and interventions

  • Expand knowledge in relation to Evidence Based Interventions and resilience
